God's Children
Children are part of life at Starcross and have
been from the beginning. Looking back over more than twenty years
of parenting foster and adopted children we realize that although
our projects have varied greatly, the basic philosophy has always
been to assist children in danger of being forgotten. We have tried
to provide a stable and nourishing environment for vulnerable children
and to serve as a model that would influence others.
The STORY OF CHILDREN AT STARCROSS can be
divided into three parts.
-
BEFORE 1986
which included our beginnings and our foster children.
-
AIDS Perhaps
we are best known for our response to children with AIDS. We
have adopted or taken legal guardianship of 6 HIV+ children
at Starcross. Since the late 1980's we have also worked with
officials to set up appropriate programs for HIV+ children;
became a resource for foster and adoptive parents of HIV+ children;
helped women living with AIDS plan for their children; tried
to change attitudes in social services and in the general public
about children with AIDS; established
CASA SPERANTA in Romania
to care for children with AIDS; and sponsored
KIN INITIATIVE in Uganda to provide
assistance, education and hope to children orphaned by AIDS.

THE PRESENT
-
There is also information on the individual
children in our FAMILY at Starcross,
our EXTENDED FAMILY, and our
INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS.
Each child presents a unique challenge. We have
never seen ourselves as a child care agency or a group ministering
specifically to children. Yet, caring for God's children is a large
part of what we do. We will always have them in our midst. And,
we love them dearly.
