HOUSE OF HOPE - UGANDA

HOUSES OF HOPE - AFRICA. In response to the worldwide crisis of the AIDS pandemic, Starcross Kin Worldwide operates Houses of Hope for AIDS orphans in sub-Saharan Africa at Kampala, Uganda. Destitute children are given a second chance at life and cared for until they become productive, independent adults. Funding is through yearly individual sponsorships. A House of Hope Advisory (HoHa) committee meets frequently in Santa Rosa.
UGANDA. Since 1997 we have served over 100 children. Originally we were asked to help grandparents, mostly peasant farmers, who were struggling to raise their children's children. We assisted by paying school fees, medical expenses, etc. As these elderly people died, the children, who had no other relatives, came to live at our House of Hope in rural Gganda village.
Most of these children are now in high school or beyond. In May 2004, we closed the Gganda house and moved to a more convenient location on the outskirts of the capital city, Kampala. Long-time foster mother, Margaret Nanteza, became the new director. With a helper Margaret cares for 14 children remaining in primary school. (One child is HIV+ but healthy now.) She also serves as a social worker, visiting and supervising the activities of our 80+ teenagers in boarding schools.
Thanks to education and government attention, the number of new HIV infections in Uganda is decreasing. We have decided not to accept new children into our program. We have committed to care for these until they achieve independence. In most cases that will mean high school and a vocational course. Upon completion, we will provide the graduate with the appropriate tool (welder, sewing machine, carpentry tools, etc.) and "seed money" for starting out. Half will be a grant, half an interest-free loan to be repaid in small monthly installments. Several of the children show tremendous academic potential. We will attempt to find the funds or scholarships to provide them with university training.
We are very proud of these fine young people growing up in Uganda.
We ask for a one year commitment of $800.00 (or $400 for a half sponsorship) which can be renewed. If you prefer, we can bill you quarterly. Visa and Mastercards are accepted.
